The Windmill Dutch Oven


The Dutch oven is a fine cast iron pan that can be used at high temperatures. The Dutch oven stands on three cast iron legs that are attached to the pan and comes with a lid and handle to be able to use the pan even more versatile.


Cooking with a cast iron Dutch oven


Cooking with a Dutch oven can be done in many different ways. The pan can withstand enormous heat and can therefore be used directly above or even in the fire. For example, to add extra heat in the pan, you can put coal or briquettes on the lid of the pan to cook the dish.


You can prepare many dishes in a Dutch oven. Think of the following:
- Stew
- Soup
- Lasagna
- Risotto


You can also bake a bread with the cast iron pan. Due to the heat of the pan, the bread can cook well but the outside will not brown too quickly.


In addition, this cast-iron pan stands on legs, which makes it more stable to place over a campfire, creating more space between the coals and the pan. A Dutch oven without legs, on the other hand, has the advantage that it is easier to use in the oven, on your grill or in the Kamado.


Maintain cast iron pans


After use, clean the Dutch oven with water and a soft sponge. Scratch as little as possible with a hard sponge or brush. Hot water is often sufficient. In addition, soap can damage the natural anti-stick layer.


Cast iron is a thick and strong material. Cast iron can rust if it is outside for a long time and is not treated correctly. It is wise to grease the Dutch oven with oil or The Windmill seasoning / conditioner after use. This protects the cast iron from moisture and eventually rust.

Zeer mooie dutch oven. Het was even werk om deze pan te seasonen (met petromax onderhoudswerk) maar dat zorgt er wel voor dat er niets blijft plakken in deze pan.
Inmiddels heb ik de pan een paar keer gebruikt boven het open vuur (in combinatie met de driepoot) en in de barbecue. Door de pootjes onder de pan is het soms lastig om ‘m recht op m’n rooster in de barbecue te krijgen, maar boven het vuur is dat onmisbaar, zeker ook omdat de deksel dezelfde pootjes heeft, waardoor je die gemakkelijk ondersteboven op de grond kan leggen. Fijn in gebruik en door het formaat passen er best flinke porties vlees in om er een mooi stoofpotje oid in te maken.
